What is eSim
eSIM is an electronic SIM card built into most new smart devices that allows us to use an electronic SIM card instead of using a traditional SIM card that has been used since the beginning of the mobile network. Síminn was the first telecommunications company in Iceland to implement eSIM.
You simply pair your subscription with Síminn to the eSIM card and almost everything works normally.
The main advantages of eSIM are:
- A more environmentally friendly option. There is no need to mass-produce plastic SIM cards anymore.
- You cannot lose the SIM card, it is part of your phone.
- It is possible to move between telecommunications companies without changing the SIM card.
- You can have two phone numbers in one phone e.g. two eSIM cards or one eSIM and another conventional SIM card.
The main disadvantage of eSIM as it stands today is that they do not support electronic IDs. Activating an eSIM will deactivate your electronic ID. The ID app can be used instead, but it must be activated before switching to an eSIM. However, it is possible to use an eSIM for all electronic communications rather than another traditional SIM card for electronic IDs if your phone offers such use.
You can get an eSIM at your nearest Síminn store. Your phone then guides you through the activation process after you scan the included QR code.
